5-Amino-1MQ (5-Amino-1-methylquinolinium) is a synthetic small molecule quinolinium compound — not a peptide — functioning as a selective inhibitor of nicotinamide N-methyltransferase (NNMT) in laboratory research models. Structurally characterized by an amino group at position 5 of the quinolinium ring and a methyl group at the quaternary nitrogen center (N-1). The compound has been characterized as membrane-permeable in laboratory cell models, which has been noted in published NNMT inhibitor research examining intracellular pathway access. Developed from structure-activity relationship studies at the University of Texas at Austin (Neelakantan et al., 2017). Investigated in preclinical and in vitro laboratory models examining NNMT pathway modulation, S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) pathway signaling research, NAD+ precursor pathway activity, adipose tissue metabolic pathway signaling, epigenetic regulation pathway research, and one-carbon metabolism pathway studies. Referenced in published preclinical literature examining small molecule NNMT inhibitor profiles and downstream metabolic pathway signaling in laboratory model systems.
