Epithalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide (Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly) developed as an analogue of Epithalamin, a polypeptide isolated from bovine pineal gland tissue extracts in laboratory studies conducted by Khavinson and Morozov at the St. Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology. The tetrapeptide's notably acidic character — arising from consecutive glutamic acid and aspartic acid residues at positions 2 and 3 — has been characterized in published structural studies. Investigated in preclinical and in vitro laboratory models examining telomerase pathway activity, telomere length regulation pathway research, cellular senescence pathway signaling, genomic stability mechanisms, oxidative stress pathway modulation, and pineal gland peptide signaling research. One of the more extensively documented synthetic tetrapeptides in the Russian preclinical research literature, with published studies examining telomere-associated pathway activity across multiple laboratory model systems.
